January 2019 Concert review
The Station Singers’ concert, ‘Home for Christmas, Peace at Last’, postponed due to icy weather in December, took place on Saturday 12th January and was well worth the wait. St. Mary’s Church was full to capacity.
A declaration from International World Choir Day emphasised the sense of unity that choral singing can bring and the three choirs then shared a moving selection of music. The programme was beautifully balanced; the first half of the evening presented songs to commemorate The Armistice and peace, whilst the second half served as a reminder of the celebration of Christmas. Music ranged from a haunting interpretation of ‘Where have all the flowers gone’ to a rousing rendition of ‘World in Union’ to a modern, tightly-sung version of ‘In the Bleak Mid-Winter’. There was something for everyone to enjoy. The audience joined in community singing during the evening and this added to a sense of oneness.
Two local charity groups, CRACCL (our local libraries), represented by Sue Young and Judith Clark, and StoreHouse food bank from The Influence Church led by Suz Gregory, provided excellent front of house teams, refreshments and servers. It was a pleasure to support one another and £1400 was raised for these very deserving charities . As always, it is the community working together that makes the evening a success. The first raffle prize was drawn by our honoured guest Mr Bill Glover, Chair of Richmond District Council, who was accompanied by his wife, Susan.
